Ospreys have become very common and widespread after the DDT and pesticide bans in 1972. You can find them along the coast, marshes, lakes and rivers almost worldwide. They are magnificent to watch hovering over the water before plunging talons first into the water to catch a fish. They will occasionally stray from a diet of fish and eat snakes, small birds and small mammals. They build huge nests of sticks and branches, oftentimes on a nesting box build by people. They can live 15-20 years.
