Chincoteague Island National Wildlife Refuge

Located in Virginia, this barrier island is one of the most visited refuges in the United States. This park is full of beaches, dunes, marshes and a maritime forest. Everyone knows Chincoteague for the wild ponies, but there is much more to this refuge. Regardless of time of year, you will see an abundance of wildlife. Winter is by far the best time, however, with very few people and the ones you find are likely photographers or locals. The sunrises and sunsets are beyond amazing, and the ponies seem to trek a little closer with fewer people around. There are so many places to drive and park or walk to observe the wildlife. You will find many migratory birds along with some magnificent views of the ocean, bay and marshes.
