Great Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in North America, and is very common and widespread. They can be seen standing very motionless in shallow waters along lake beds and the edges of rivers. These birds can move silently through the water as they stalk their prey, then strike their quarry rapidly. They can be seen catching mostly fish and frogs, but can venture to snakes, turtles, rodents and birds. Because of such a varied diet, they can often remain far north during winter, even when waters freeze.
